A couple of weeks go, I found myself “taking cover” in the basement of my home as I heard the emergency alert system going off for what seemed to be hours. Usually, that sound to me is annoying, “it is just another test” I think to myself while going about my business; but this time it was different. Two days prior to that the town of Joplin, Missouri located less than 3 hours away from me was hit by what is now recorded as one of the most devastating Tornado storms in the history of the area.
With that in mind, I check the news to learn of the details as well as what precautions should be taken and realize that my daughter’s school is in the path of the storm, she is in school; My husband is at work and that area of town is also under a tornado warning. It is time to take a deep breath, and take some practical precautions as I head downstairs, realizing that cell phone lines are not working, so almost impossible to reach him.
My next action and attitude still surprise me and taught me a valuable lesson. I didn’t panic, I just asked God if it pleases him to divert the storm and to protect my family, friends and the city. Then I proceeded to spend sometime listening to music and singing praises to the Creator of the Universe, the One who created “mother nature” and who with one word calmed the storm during that boat ride some 2000 years ago. Amazingly enough my attention shifted from thinking about the storm, what could happen and the consequences, to just spending time with the Lover of my soul. Suddenly thoughts of devastation, and fear were far away.
About an hour later, my family is home safely, I get out of the “shelter” just to realize that it is over.
Later on, as I checked Facebook I saw pictures of how scary it looked outside and I started realizing that this was a picture of our lives. We go through storms individually or even as a family, a church or any other group. The single most important attitude that will carry us through is to set our eyes on the One who has the absolute best in store for us and whose promises will come to pass. As we take our focus off the storms of lives and concentrate on the Lord, He takes away the fear, and replaces it with His peace. Suddenly the things that were scary, and seemed dangerous and threatening, are nothing compared to the calm that he places in our hearts. He never said we will not face hardships, He said he will be with us through them.
Today, as you read this trust in this simple truth. No matter how many times you have heard it, make the decision to embrace it and to let Him hover you and bathe you in His peace. He is the Master of the Universe and the one who makes and create the seasons of life. There is always a next season, a next phase in your life.
