“In 2011, fresh off a college degree and shaken by a failed attempt at professional football, Atlanta-born and bred 22-year old Afu Okosun found himself at the lowest of lows. After homelessness, unemployment and “the real world” forced him even closer to God, what started out as a vent of sorts turned into his personal address to the world.”
Born of a Cameroonian mom and a Nigerian dad, raised African American, we were curious about how the young author has navigated these different worlds, metamorphosing into an inspiring voice for his generation.
Today’s DUNIA Magazine One-on-One introduces you to the now 24-year old Afu Okosun, author of blockbuster King Without A Crown:
1. Who is Afu Okosun?
Afu Okosun is a young man intent on changing the world, his generation to be exact. I’m a young man that understands that life is all about progression. Nothing will ever be picture perfect, but God-willing we can all live out our purpose to make each other’s lives fulfilling and worthwhile. There is so much to who I am as a person, but overall I’m a child of God who’s just trying to do my thing and change the world at the same time!
2. What are some core values that guide you
I was raised in a Christian family and have been in the church all of my life. Coming from an African family, there was a sense of responsibility, selflessness and pride that is deeply rooted in me. God and family are the things that have shaped how I govern myself and mixed in with my experiences, I feel that I’m able to make good decisions.
3. How do you keep yourself motivated to achieve your goals?
I dream so big that I understand that with the things I have achieved, there is still so much more for me to do. I always keep the mentality that I haven’t done anything yet. It keeps me hungry for greatness.
4. Tell us something about your new book King Without A Crown (#KWAC)
It is real. And I know that word is misused a lot but once you read it, you’ll understand why I say that. It is raw, uncut emotionally charged storytelling and substance all rolled into one book. KWAC is who I am and am yet becoming.
5. What are some of the challenges you’ve faced so far in your journey and how did you overcome them?
Life is the ultimate challenge. Day to day struggles financially, personal situations and just remaining steadfast and deliberate with this journey has been the biggest thing for me. Understanding that in order to achieve this vision and dream, I had to look past my circumstances and make a way out of no way. And that is exactly what I did.
6. Why does this generation need your book?
It needs my book because I ultimately feel that my message, one of progression and constant growth is something that we lack. It is time for us to step up to the plate of being leaders and understand that life is so much more than the superficial things at we’ve begin to glorify. This book is bigger than me. It’s for us all.
