I was both floored and curious (for reasons I would rather keep to myself) when I heard a couple of days ago that the Cameroon government was imposing a dress code on girls. So I asked for information from Cameroon and the following is what has been forwarded to us.

On 20th November 2013, a campaign headed by the Minister of Women’s Empowerment and the Family, Marie Therese Abena followed by 3 other Ministries in Cameroon, identified high numbers of indecent dressing over the national territory, as girls dress indecently wearing tight fitting skirts or trousers that clearly show their body undulations, exposing their breasts, belly, backs and other seductive parts while boys indecently dress, showing their under wears, putting their trousers beneath their buttocks, putting on earrings and keeping bushy hairs. Government has launched the campaign to clean the streets of indecently dressing by girls/boys.
My analyses
The government launches this campaign to curb indecent dressing mindful of the fact that most girls dress indecently in a bid to attract men for sexual reasons hence prostitution. Taking into consideration that prostitution is an offence punishable under section 343 of the Cameroon Penal Code. The punishment ranges from six months to five years imprisonment or a fine of 20,000 to 500,000. The campaign launched by government is to arrest girls/boys who are dressed indecently, be it in a bid to attract men for sexual purposes / prostitution or not.
Cameroon remains a moral society baring homosexuality/ moral ills.
