Anrette Ngafor AKinyele discusses her fashion line Liiber London and the inspiration behind it.
DUNIA Magazine: Why the name ‘Liiber’ London? What does it stand for?
Anrette Ngafor AKinyele (ANA): Liiber simply came from the word Liberty. As I researched the translated version of the word in Latin, it came up with Libero but I wanted a name that would be memorable because as we know, when picking the name of a brand you want something that sticks the very first time someone hears it and London is my home; the city influences a lot of my work so I couldn’t have come up with a better name than Liiber London.
What influences your designs?
ANA: Liiber London is influenced by everything we see around us from shapes, sounds, lines, culture, architecture, and people. As a creative soul you have to be able to draw inspiration from things around you and what other people have done.
How are you able to merge your Cameroonian culture with the British culture you now live in?
ANA: Lol … that is really easy for me because you can see from my work that I am able to merge both worlds easily. A lot of my work is influenced by the lifestyle I see every day in London and also spending a lot of time in Cameroon lately. You can see I bring in a cultural aspect in my designs and try to do what others have never thought of doing.
Why Fashion design? How have you been able to horn your craft over the years?
ANA: Fashion design is what I have always wanted to do as a young girl and I am glad my parents saw the spirit in me and encouraged me. The last 4 years of my career I have spent working hard to perfect my craft and I consider my self a business woman and not just a fashion designer.
Would you consider yourself to be a fashionista? If yes, what makes you one and how do you keep up with trends?
ANA: That’s a really funny question and yes the answer is “yes”. I do love fashion but I am not always crazy about following fashion religiously because I cannot really say I have one particular style. Once I wake up for the day I dress based on how I feel for the day. I do keep up with trends because as a designer you have to always research on future trends so you know what you are doing because customers usually like to follow trends of the seasons.
Who’s the typical Liiber London woman?
ANA: Woah a typical Liiber London woman? She’s got verve, drive and a free spirit. But above all she’s a one-off, just like our exquisite pieces.
What’s in the future for the fashion line?
ANA: The future for Liiber London is full of challenges as we are working hard to set up a proper production centre where we can produce our luxury brand items in the highest of quality and also help other young designers to produce quality because this industry is all about quality.
We are also making sure that we get small fashion boutiques to stock our work . We do have some stores that have approached us but we are very careful who we stock with because we do have an image we want to up hold.
