The Chocolate Hills consist of 1268 – 1776 hills covering an area of about 20sq miles in Bohol Province of the Philippines. The hills expand over a large area covering 5 towns.
The Chocolate Hills are uniform in shape, ranging between 30 and 50 meters in height.
The grass covering on the hills turns dark brown during the dry season, making them look like chocolate cones (hence the name). During the rainy season, the grass on the hills is green.
“Between the hills lie well developed flat plains that contain numerous caves and springs.” – Amusing Planet.
The Chocolate Hills are a major natural touristic attraction to the area.
Tourists and visitors to the hills have described being spellbound by the magic of the topography.
Greg Quinion documented his trip to the Chocolate Hills in November 2013. He wrote:
“As the road climbed upward, I found myself deep in the heart of a broad plateau, where rolling limestone hills competed with flat rice paddies for my attention.
Then, rather suddenly, there they were: huge conical hills rising up from the edge of a wet, green landscape.
I had first viewed the hills from the window of my airplane. From above, it appeared the Earth had broken out in tiny goosebumps. It was impressive, but nothing compared with seeing them up close.”
