According to a 2012 and 2013 Gallup poll, Latin Americans are the least likely in the world to say women in their countries are treated with respect and dignity.
The countries which ranked lowest in percentage of those who said their women were treated with dignity and respect were Brazil, Guatemala, Trinidad and Tobago, Colombia and Peru (only 1 in 5 residents in Peru and Colombia said their women are treated with respect).

In Latin America, where machismo still determines the relationship between the sexes, femicides are particularly common. Femicide is the murder of women simply because of their gender. Filmmaker Paula Rodriguez Sickert traveled through the Andean countries of Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru and tells the stories of three women who were attacked or killed because they wanted to live their lives their own way.
