Victims of Daniel Holtzclaw (former cop guilty of sexually assaulting women on the job) speak out
On Thursday December 11, 2015, former Oklahoma City police officer Daniel Holtzclaw was found guilty of the rape and sexual battery of 8 women.
Of the 36 charges filed against him by 13 women, Daniel Holtzclaw was convicted of 18 – including first-degree rape, forcible oral sodomy, second-degree rape, sexual battery and procuring lewd exhibition.
News OK reports:
The victims were all black, all with criminal histories of drug use or prostitution.
For six months, prosecutors allege, Oklahoma City police officer Daniel Ken Holtzclaw prowled the dimly lit nighttime streets of one of the state’s poorest neighborhoods engaging in an escalating level of sexual assaults, often while on duty.
The incidents took place in private residences and in a police car parked on streets or in empty lots, authorities say. The crimes advanced from groping, to oral sodomy, to rape. The victims ranged in ages from 34 to 58.
The jury, made up of eight men and four women, deliberated for 45 hours.
According to NBC News:
It wasn’t until a black woman in her 50s — identified in court papers as J.L. — came forward and told police what allegedly happened after Holtzclaw stopped her on June 18, 2014, that an investigation was launched.
Holtzclaw was fired before the trial began. The Oklahoma City Police Department said in a statement after the guilty verdicts were reached that it “is pleased with the jury’s decision.”
Victims’ ages ranged from 17 to 57.
