The astonishing China Great Wall dating as far back as 220BC, is made up of a series of walls and fortifications that were built to defend ancient China.
The Chinese great wall is one of the world’s greatest historical wonders and today we are uncovering why…
The China Great Wall stretches for over 13,000 miles, making it the world’s longest fortification.
China’s Great Wall is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Its main body consists of walls, horse tracks, watch towers, and shelters on the wall, and includes fortresses and passes along the Wall. It provides significant physical evidence of the far-sighted political strategic thinking and mighty military and national defence forces of central empires in ancient China, and is an outstanding example of the superb military architecture, technology and art of ancient China. It embodies unparalleled significance as the national symbol for safeguarding the security of the country and its people. (UNESCO)
The Great Walls were built from earth, stone, brick, wood and other natural material, winding from the east to west of China.
Over the years, sections of the China great wall have eroded and deteriorated and are falling apart. Some parts of the Chinese great wall are experiencing damage by natural elements such as rain, and even tourist activity.
Sections of the great wall in Badaling and Mutianyu are most well-preserved and are also very popular with tourists.
This week, local Chinese officials in Liaoning’s Suizhong county (along the border with Hebei province) have come under heavy criticism over the quality of preservation repairs that were done in 2014 on a 1.2 mile section of the wall in that northeast part of the country.
To the dismay of historians and the general public, this area was reportedly splattered with cheap cement, a far cry from the materials used in its original construction. “It damaged the original look of the Great Wall and took away the history from the people,” said China Society deputy director Dong Yaohui.
