Stretched for cash this holiday season? Need a quick way to scrounge up a few extra bucks?
If so, check Pennsylvania’s unclaimed property program to see if there is property waiting for you to claim.
Have you ever forgotten to cash a last paycheck or reclaim a deposit from your cable company? This money isn’t lost forever. Instead, it is turned over to the Pennsylvania Treasury’s Bureau of Unclaimed Property program where it awaits claim by its rightful owner.
You can check online for free 24/7 by visiting www.patreasury.gov and clicking on the unclaimed property link. According to PA Treasurer Timothy A. Reese, “There’s approximately three billion dollars of property waiting to be claimed and since roughly one in ten Pennsylvanians has property waiting to be collected, it’s definitely worth checking!”
Annually, Treasury receives millions of dollars in unclaimed property–items such as abandoned bank accounts, forgotten stocks, uncashed checks and contents of safety deposit boxes. The property remains available for claim by the owners or their heirs in perpetuity and Treasury serves as the custodian until it can find and verify its rightful legal owner.
“In 2016, the Treasury collected and returned more unclaimed property than any other year,” Treasurer Reese said. “Treasury’s goal is to reconnect as many people as possible with property and funds that are rightfully theirs.”
The Pennsylvania Treasury reunited thousands of Pennsylvanians with a record $175 million in property and money in 2016 bringing the total value of money and items returned since July 1, 2005 to $1.3 billion. Additionally, Treasury collected $400 million in dormant and forgotten property this year.
So, before you start flipping couch cushions or digging through pant pockets or purses looking for a few extra dollars, take a quick trip to the PA Treasury Bureau of Unclaimed Property website because you never know what you might find this holiday season.
