In less than one month, the Jussie Smollett case has gone from being investigated as a hate crime that captivated the country to the actor (now defendant) facing charges of disorderly conduct alleging he filed a false police report; a crime that is classified as a felony in the State of Illinois.
According to court documents, it was reported that the ‘Empire’ show Star Jussie Smollett in the early morning hours of January 29, 2019 was attacked by two masked men who yelled racist and homophobic slurs and placed a rope around his neck.
Weeks of Police investigation that followed according to Law Enforcement officials, indicate that Smollett paid two brothers he knew to fake the attack.
Here is a detailed press conference on the investigation by the Cook County State Attorney’s office…
Mr Smollett is currently in police custody and bond is set at $100,000; he has been ordered to turn in his passport.
If convicted in the State’s case, Jussie Smollett faces up to three years in prison (or possible probation) and could be ordered to pay for the cost of the investigation, which involved more than 20 detectives over three weeks, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Mr Smollett is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
