Nicola Posener is an actor from the United Kingdom, now living in LA, whose professional career began in 2005. Charming, down to earth and with incredible natural beauty, Nicola has flourished in her chosen career, a career she had always dreamed about. She was introduced to CBBC TV fans for the very first time in The Mysti Show in 2005. This experience was a stepping stone and since then she hasn’t looked back! Her roles have been diverse and she has been in Dawn of the Dragonslayer, Nightmare Wedding, Age of the Living Dead and Mythica. So, readers of DUNIA Magazine, if you want to know more, then come and join my conversation with the actor herself. Enjoy!
Nik A Ramli: Hello, how are you?
Nicola Posener: Very well, thank you for inviting me to chat!
So, is there such a thing as a typical working day for you and if so, what does it involve?
Nicola: A typical working day on a film set is a 12 – 16-hour day, everything depends on the production itself as it could be night shoots / day shoots / on location / at a studio base. There can be a little bit of waiting around dependent on schedules, but typically it’s a lot of fun, great on-set camaraderie and a really lovely atmosphere when your cast mates begin to feel more like family.
Where did your desire to be an actor come from?
Nicola: It’s tricky to pin-point but I have always loved the arts. As a child I would go to the theatre a lot; I was always involved with the local theatre productions. It was a passion and hobby that I continued to pursue throughout my whole life. Dream job!
Before playing lead roles you appeared as a guest star in a few TV shows. How were you discovered and who discovered you?
Nicola: I wish I could put it down to a discovery but I actually went the very typical route of gaining representation out of college and submitted through my agent for roles in film and television. I was fortunate enough to book my first guest star in the CBBC show Mysti.
In 2005, you appeared for the first time in ‘The Mysti Show’. What was the role you played and what was the experience like?
Nicola: It was an absolutely fantastic experience, extremely nerve-wracking but I was so well supported by the cast and crew. The character was Perina – an evil fairy. Mysti was a fun show for children’s television so everything was heightened, so bright and colorful and great costumes in this fantasy setting.
Starting your acting career in the UK you then went to the United States to pursue your ambition. That must have been exciting! What was it like to have the opportunity to act in an American production?
Nicola: It was wonderful and extremely unexpected. I had always hoped to someday go to the States to pursue acting but surprisingly the opportunity came through my UK agent when I received an offer in London to shoot 5 fantasy films in the US… it was the invitation to cross the pond. So rather than moving to Los Angeles, I in fact came here with the offer and visas and ultimately decided to stay. I really enjoy living and working in Los Angeles.
Was that the point you thought “Yeah, this is it”?
Nicola: It’s ongoing. Every time I audition on a studio-lot… it brings me back to being an excited child with the love for film. It’s ultimately a passion of mine and so the appreciation of the creative process and surroundings never leaves.
You now reside in LA, USA. Was life in the USA easy when you first moved there?
Nicola: Thankfully it wasn’t such a tricky transition as Mythica had opened many doors and paved the way for a longer stay. I had my fantastic friends from the cast living here and I had reps in place from my time on Disney Channel so luckily it was fairly smooth.
How different is the acting business in the USA compared to the Britain?
Nicola: I do notice there are more projects going into production here in Los Angeles so it’s certainly a busier lifestyle with greater opportunities for work.
Being a British actor working across the Atlantic, do you feel you have to represent the United Kingdom on an international level in any way?
Nicola: Absolutely, and I do so with the wonderful support of BAFTA (British Academy Of Film And Television Arts). The prestigious organization is a brilliant platform that supports myself and other British actors new to Los Angeles opening doors and creating opportunities. I feel a great responsibility and duty to show the Brits in a strong light with our love and professionalism for the craft.
Excitingly, you have been selected by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (LOS ANGELES) as a rising star. Can you tell us a bit more about this?
Nicola: Every year BAFTA selects a handful of individuals, be it actors, producers, directors and offers us a platform to support our career and represent the talent of the United Kingdom. I was extremely fortunate to have been selected for the 4-year program which consists of mentoring, networking, screenings and Q & A’s.
What is your favourite role to date?
Nicola: I think my favourite role is Teela, from the 5-part fantasy film series Mythica. I played the role over the period of 3 years. Teela possessed so many great qualities such as loyalty, strength, dignity, independence and so very caring of others. It was such a pleasure to portray such a brilliant and well-rounded character.
Finally, it was a pleasure to speak to you Nicola, thank you for your time.
Nicola: Thank you so much.
