1. Be polite.“Politeness is to human nature what warmth is to wax,” is a popular quote by Arthur Schopenhauer. People are naturally drawn to courteous and respectful individuals. Humility is also quite irresistible. These cost nothing.
2. Remember names. Everyone likes the sound of their name. Remember individual names and addressing people by their names is a sure way to win points.
3. Listen. People like to know that their opinions matters. Hold your tongue sometimes and just listen. It’s important to carefully work on crafting the art of ‘being a person of few words’ by paying attention and saying less. Hard sometimes but worth the try. Remember the saying, “empty vessels make the loudest noise”? Don’t be one.
4. Appreciate. Acknowledge the work, contributions and gifts of others. Be sure to let them know that you do appreciate them. ‘Congratulations‘ and ‘job well done‘ work magic at the job site and even in our personal lives. Hand written ‘thank you’ notes also make an unforgettable impression.
5. Be yourself. Always keep things real, and open up doors so people can get to know the real you. Just like fake designer handbags, people smell ‘fakeness’ from a distance. Don’t be one. Remember that not everyone is going to like the real you, and even fake you anyway, so why hide? We all need some polishing up. If you feel like you need to, work on personal developing/self-improvement by reading and attending seminars.
6. Engage others. Make people feel important by acknowledging them, by being curious about their lives and above all, by genuinely caring about their well-being.
7. Give. Approach relationships from the ‘giving’ angle, and not always from what you stand to gain. Folks are unconsciously drawn to those who provide value and are willing givers of their time, resources, knowledge and skills.
8. Stand for something concrete. Let those around you recognize your values and the things that are important to you. Say what you mean and mean what you say. Always remember that folks who flip and then flop loss respect fast.
9. Don’t be a know-it-all. Achievements are great and should be applauded, but sometimes, forget those degrees, and shelves full of accolades for a minute and allow yourself a chance to grow some more. Life itself is ‘continuing education’. By seeking to learn and to understand where others are coming from, we easily build rapport.
10. Last but not least, have a positive attitude. Everyone who meets you should be glad they did. Remember that a positive attitude attracts positive things.
