Thailand is a country rich in culture, diversity and hospitality. Located in southeastern Asia, Thailand is a top touristic destination, attracting an estimated 16 million visitors every year.
Thailand with a population of around 66 million has a strong economy and relatively stable political system. Its capital city is Bangkok, and Bangkok is also the largest city where 1 in 10 Thais live.
The word Thai means “land of the free”. Thailand was never colonized by Europeans, making it the only country in south-east Asia not to have been subjected to such European influence.
Thailand maintains strong customs and traditions.
Thai customs require girls to maintain chastity until marriage. Violation of this rule is considered a misconduct, leading to loss of reputation.
Thai clothing is traditionally made from a variety of cotton and silk textiles. Each ethnic group has its own distinctive patterns of clothing for domestic (home wear), and ceremonial purposes, thus transforming textiles into markers of identity.
Keep your hands to yourself! Foreigners who are not that familiar with some Thai etiquette often find their gestures of goodwill such as an outstretched hand, or a move to help a young lady step out of the car ignored.
