Lugu Lake is a scenic body of water located in the southwestern Yunnan and Sichuan Provinces of China.
Surrounded by lush forests, hills and mountains, the Lugu Lake area is packed with nature and is known for its traditionally organic, preserved lifestyle.
Lugu Lake covers an estimated 60 square kilometers (around 15,000 acres).

Inhabitants and visitors of Lugu Lake enjoy some of the most unspoiled, fascinating and original wonders that the world has to offer.
Visitors are drawn from surrounding bustling cities into quiet culturally intact villages where people dress in traditional attire. They are wowed by sprawling landscapes, ancient Buddhist temples and monasteries, historical relics and symbolic structures, food and warm welcomes. The area offers vast farmlands, a range of wildlife and fauna, clear lakes and rivers, parks and gorges… and a mix of much more.

There are 5 islands on Lugu Lake.
Heiwawu Island, Liwubi Island, and Lige Island are the most populated and popular.
Nixi Island is the smallest island on the lake.
Unlike most beloved travel destinations where travel is recommended during specific periods of the year, visitors can go to Lugu Lake all year round for an unforgettable experience; although March and October record the most tourists to Lugu Lake.

The Lugu Lake region is inhabited by a number of ethnic groups. The Mosuo people are the most populous; they are also well known for their matriarchal way of life as explored by the following documentary:
