The West African nation of Niger, officially known as the Republic of Niger, is bordered by Algeria and Libya to the north; Chad to the east; Benin and Nigeria to the south; and Burkina Faso and Mali to the west.
Niger has a population of approximately 24.5 million (2022 est., CIA World Factbook) and covers an area of about 1,267,000 square kilometers – making it the largest country in West Africa by land area.
Because of its proximity to the Sahara Desert, Niger is one of the hottest countries in the world. During the hottest months, from February to May, temperatures can reach as high as 113°F (45°C).
Much of northern Niger consists of vast expanses of hot, arid desert. Moving southward, the terrain gradually transitions into plains characterized by a tropical climate.
Niamey, located in the southwestern part of the country, is the capital and largest city of Niger. Zinder is another major city.

Did You Know: The country takes its name from the Niger River, Africa’s third-longest river after the Nile and the Congo. The Niger River stretches approximately 4,180 kilometers (2,600 miles) and flows through Guinea, Mali, Niger, and parts of Benin, and Nigeria.
