By funding community-focused, Black-led solutions, the City of Toronto aims to foster grassroots environmental leadership and advance collective action against climate change.
The City of Toronto, Canada has launched the Black-Led Climate Action Grants program, offering up to $50,000 to support community-driven environmental solutions.
By combining the targets of Toronto’s TransformTO Net Zero Strategy with the priorities of the Action Plan to Confront Anti-Black Racism, the initiative aims to build an equitable, healthy, and climate-resilient city.
The TransformTO Net Zero Strategy is Toronto’s climate action plan committed to reducing community-wide greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2040. It targets major sectors like buildings, transportation, and waste while prioritizing social equity, public health, and local economic resilience for reaching its goals.
Meanwhile the Confronting Anti-Black Racism initiative is a municipal strategy designed to dismantle systemic barriers, discrimination, and inequities affecting residents of African descent.
Addressing Equity in Climate Action
According to the City of Toronto, climate change impacts communities unevenly. Black Torontonians often face compounded social, economic, and environmental vulnerabilities while encountering systemic barriers to securing traditional funding. The Black-Led Climate Action Grants program works to bridge that gap by directly resourcing Black-led initiatives and localized leadership.
Co-Designed with the Community
To ensure cultural relevance and accessibility, the City developed the program alongside community stakeholders between January and June 2026. Through workshops, expert interviews, and open submissions, participants helped establish the program’s core guiding principles:
- Accessibility & Community Leadership: Lowering barriers to entry and centering local voices.
- Capacity-Building & Mentorship: Strengthening networks and support systems for long-term impact.
- Cultural Relevance & Sustainability: Supporting existing climate efforts within Black communities while equipping them for future success.
