The Twin Lakes of Muanenguba are a pair of crater lakes on Mount Muanenguba, located in Bangem, Kupe-Muanenguba Subdivision, in Cameroon’s South West Region.
Surrounded by rolling hills, lush vegetation, and often mist-shrouded skies, the area has long been associated with a sense of sacredness. Its spiritual significance is well known across the country and has contributed to the lakes’ growing popularity among tourists.
The Twin Lakes hold deep cultural significance for the indigenous Bakossi people:
“The Kupe-Muanenguba Mountains harbor the greatest sacred places in the Bakossi tribe. It is here that the best herbs are found and it is also where sacrifices are performed..” — All About Cameroon
Male and Female Lakes
Of the two lakes, one — its shape said to resemble the map of Africa, is regarded as the Female Lake. Its waters appear deep blue and, according to local belief, are associated with a gentler and more welcoming energy.
Beside it lies the smaller Male Lake, distinguished by its striking green waters. The two lakes are believed to possess contrasting energies: the Female Lake is perceived as calm, approachable, and inviting, while the Male Lake carries a stronger, more foreboding presence.
For this reason, the Female Lake is generally considered more approachable, while visitors are advised to treat the Male Lake with greater caution and respect. As local accounts describe it:
