French-Cameroonian designer Ayissi symbolizes Respect and Power in his WAZAL designs

Ayissi Nga Joseph-Marie aka JJ Du Style is a fashion designer and creator of chic street wear. The French-Cameroonian designer whose father was a tailor, launched his own clothing ‘WAZAL’ in 2005, following in the footsteps of pioneer Cameroonian fashion designers such as Imane Ayissi and Martial Topolo.

In 2006, Ayissi presented his first designs and gained recognition as his designs were worn by celebrities such as Singuila, Alpeco, Wayne Beckford, Romaric Koffi and Lalcko.

The brand’s name “WAZAL” is a blend of “WAZA”, the name of a natural park in the extreme north of Cameroon and the letter “L” which stands for Lion, the Cameroonian national symbol. The natural park symbolizes respect, while the lion symbolizes power.

In the fashion world of Wazal Couture, casual wear is in a constant search of innovation, new styles and creativity. The designer, in mixing colors and various prints, also adds and blends other materials such as pure cotton, denim jean, wax, leather, fur, synthetic just to name a few.

Ayissi obtained professional training in fashion design at Vanessa Ruiz fashion school in Paris and he later on specialized in creating tuxedo jackets. The first was created in 2013 under the declination “Tete fly”.

In 2013, fashion designer Ayissi was one of the guests of Cameroon’s Ambassador to Paris for the exhibition of the feast of the Cameroonian Youth and the Fashion Night Lounge at Elysee Palace in Paris, where he presented his three concepts: WazalRock, fly Tété and Africafutur. These concepts are based on criteria which have become symbolic of his career since the beginning: Daring, Respect and Creative.

Wazal’s 2016/2017 collection called “Ova Tété” is inspired by a Cameroonian slang ‘ova’ which means bigger and noble person. And Tété which refers to chic and bourgeois. In addition, the word chic here is used to describe the amazing and modern appearance of the clothing. Therefore those who have good taste and have a high sense of fashion are characterized as chic. Noble and quality materials were used in this collection, including the best African print wax from Senegal and Mali. “I will say this collection is indecent, 10 years in advance or shameless 5 years in advance. I prefer being ahead because the fashion world is in constant évolution,” says the designer.

Wazal cuts and designs are not only impressive and modern, they also follow today’s latest trends.
