The origination of green tea began in China tracing back to 2737 B.C. The discovery of green tea occurred by accident, once the Chinese Emperor Shennong mistakenly drank water that had a dead herb boiled in it. Emperor Shennong found the flavour refreshing and therefore, a replacement beverage was created. Green tea was then only primarily available to the highest tiers of Chinese society and was very costly to buy. It was not until later that green tea became accessible to the general public for enjoyment and healthy purposes.
The highly flavoured green tea eventually travelled west in the 19th century, transported by European explorers. Thanks to its unimaginable flavour, it had become a huge commodity and became Great Britain’s national drink, in conjunction with black tea.
